Bristol Road, Bury St Edmunds

Bristol Road is a detached dwelling set within the historic town of Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk. The clients brief was to remove the undersized and uninspired existing rear extension which plugged on to the back of the house and as a result created underlit internal spaces with poorly defined functional identities. The new rear extension addresses the issues through the strategy used to adjoin the existing dwelling with the extension.

This is achieved through the use of custom made ‘slit’ glazing which visually separate’s the existing dwelling from the extension and floods the internal zones of the house with natural light transforming them back into appealing spaces. This Living Room has been relocated from the middle of the house to the new extension to take advantage of the garden views.

This is enhanced through the use of the ‘picture’ bay window seat and full width bi-folding doors which provide a seamless inside-outside transition. The project has been designed with sustainability at the forefront, with a sedum roof, cedar cladding and locally sourced glass.
